Quote of the Day

Xander: So, what do you think?

Buffy: It’s nice.

Xander: But do you think Cordelia will like it?

Buffy: I don’t know.  Does she know what one of these is?

Xander: Okay, big yuks. When are you guys gonna stop making fun of me for dating Cordelia?

Buffy: I’m sorry. But never.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2: Episode 16 – “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered”

Review: Ant-Man

Ant-Man shouldn’t work.  Just from a conceptual standpoint, a hero who can shrink and who hangs around with insects sounds a little goofy when compared to the exploits of the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  This isn’t Asgard or SHIELD and there’s no army of alien invaders or HYDRA soldiers with which to contend, so how could it ever feel as important or impactful as other recent Marvel films?  Add in the drama over the loss of the film’s original writer/director (and strongest advocate) Edgar Wright, and the resulting film could have been an inconsequential mess, throwing a goofy idea together with a handful of jokes and some cheesy action just to be another cog (about a straight, white male, of course) in the Marvel/Disney machine.  That Ant-Man succeeds at all is a testament to the creativity of Marvel’s storytelling and the strength of its cast, but more than that it’s perhaps Marvel’s most flat-out fun film to date.

Quote of the Day

His horses were fine animals and he sold one for as much as he had given for it; this satisfied the immediate local duns, but it did not re-establish his credit, for although Champflower was willing to believe in any amount of cloudy wealth (and Jack’s fortune had been reckoned very high), it had poverty weighed up to within a pound or two.

Analysis: Jurassic World, a Movie that Hates Itself

IMG_4726

It might be an understatement to say that I didn’t enjoy Jurassic World.  I found it alternately boring and infuriating, a wasted opportunity.  Despite that, it’s the one movie that I’ve thought the most about in the past few weeks.  Partly it’s been hard to ignore, given its monumental box office run, but there’s something more to it than that.  As much as I disliked it, I can’t shake the feeling that there might actually be more to the movie than I gave it credit for.  I don’t mean to imply that Jurassic World is secretly great, because it’s not, but watching it I had the sneaking suspicion that writer/director Colin Trevorrow might have had a not-so-hidden message he embedded in the film through certain characters, scenes, and especially its climax.  You see, I’ve never encountered a film that seems to hate itself more thanJurassic World.

Zoe: I know somethin’ ain’t right.

Wash: Sweetie, we’re crooks. If everything were right we’d be in jail.

Firefly: Episode 1 – “Serenity”

Quote of the Day

The silence swallowed them all again. Every head turned, every eye in the place seemed to have found Harry, to hold him frozen in the glare of thousands of invisible beams. Then a figure rose from the Slytherin table and he recognized Pansy Parkinson as she raised a shaking arm and screamed, “But he’s there! Potter’s there! Someone grab him!”

Before Harry could speak, there was a massive movement. The Gryffindors in front of him had risen and stood facing, not Harry, but the Slytherins. Then the Hufflepuffs stood, and almost at the same moment, the Ravenclaws, all of them with their backs to Harry, all of them looking toward Pansy instead, and Harry, awestruck and overwhelmed, saw wands emerging everywhere, pulled from beneath cloaks and from under sleeves.

Quote of the Day

Willow: Hey.

Oz: Hey.

Willow: Did you want to go first?

Oz: I spoke to Giles. He said I’ll be okay. I just have to lock myself up around the full moon. Only he used more words than that. And a globe.

Willow: I’m sorry about how all this ended up. With me shooting you and all.

Oz: It’s okay. I’m, I’m sorry I almost ate you.

Willow: It’s okay. I kind of thought you would have told me.

Oz: I didn’t know what to say. I mean, it’s not every day you find out you’re a werewolf. That’s fairly freaksome. It may take a couple days getting used to.

Willow: Yeah. It’s a complication.

Oz: So… Maybe it’d be best if I just… sorta…

Willow: What?

Oz: Well, you know, like, stayed out of your way for awhile.

Willow: I don’t know. I’m kind of okay with you being *in* my way.

Oz: You mean, you’d still…

Willow: Well, I like you. You’re nice and you’re funny. And you don’t smoke. Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that’s not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I’m not much fun to be around either.

Oz: You are quite the human.

Willow: So, I’d still if you’d still.

Oz: I’d still. I’d *very* still.

Willow: Okay. No biting, though.

Oz: Agreed.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2: Episode 15 – “Phases”

Quote of the Day

‘Let me look to your pistols,’ said Jack, as the trees came closer to the road. ‘You have no notion of hammering your flints.’

‘They are very well,’ said Stephen, unwilling to open his holsters (a teratoma in one, a bottled Arabian dormouse in the other). ‘Do you apprehend any danger?’

‘This is an ugly stretch of road, with all these disbanded soldiers turned loose. They made an attempt upon the mail not far from Aker’s Cross. Come, let me have your pistols. I thought as much: what is this?’

‘A teratoma,’ said Stephen sulkily.

‘What is a teratoma?’ asked Jack, holding the object in his hand. ‘A kind of grenado?’

‘It is an inward wen, a tumour: we find them, occasionally, in the abdominal cavity. Sometimes they contain long black hair, sometimes a set of teeth: this has both hair and teeth. It belonged to a Mr Elkins of the City, an eminent cheese-monger. I prize it much.’

‘By God,’ cried Jack, thrusting it back into the holster and whiping his hand vehemently upon the horse, ‘I do wish you would leave people’s bellies alone. So you have no pistols at all, I collect?’

‘If you wish to be so absolute, no, I have not.’

‘You will never make old bones, brother,’ said Jack.
