Reaction: Agents of SHIELD – “Parting Shot”

I’ve been sick this past week, but I didn’t want to skip over the latest Agents of SHIELD episode, as it was both emotional and exciting while also marking a big change to our beloved show. Last week brought General Talbot back into the midst in an effort by the global community to come to a consensus on the Inhuman problem, while also revealing a potential vaccine against Terrigenesis. This week’s episode was a direct follow-up to last week’s, dealing with SHIELD’s pursuit of Gideon Mallick and his attempts to strike a bargain with Russia to further HYDRA’s plans. It was a fun mission, with most of the team working together for a change, but the most important developments of the episode occurred in its final minutes. So let’s jump right into “Parting Shot” written by Paul Zbyszewski and directed by Michael Zinberg.

Reaction: Agents of SHIELD – “The Inside Man”

I’m so glad Agents of SHIELD is back! As much as I love Agent Carter, I just couldn’t get as excited about it as I do with SHIELD. Perhaps it’s SHIELD’s ability to tie into the MCU more easily, or just the fact that I’ve had many more episodes to grow attached to these characters, but the return of my favorite show gives me something to really look forward to each week on TV (especially now that Galavant is over). Last week’s spring premiere gave us a look at the sort of cases Coulson’s Secret Warriors team will be investigating due to the growing presence of Inhumans in the world, while this week’s twisty episode focused on a more global aspect to the Inhuman “threat”. We got the return of two familiar faces, one a former enemy and the other an ambiguous frenemy. In addition, we also got to dive a little deeper into the relationship between Daisy and Lincoln, as well as some more insight into the creature that returned from the alien world Maveth wearing Grant Ward’s skin. So let’s take a look at “The Inside Man” written by Craig Titley and directed by John Terlesky.

Reaction: Agents of SHIELD – “Bouncing Back”

Well my friends, Agents of SHIELD is back, off and running for the second half of season 3, and unlike previous years we already know our beloved show will be back again in the fall! It’s been a while since I covered SHIELD here on thelovepirate.net, thanks both to an Agent Carter-filled midseason hiatus and the fact that I was travelling for the final two episodes of the fall. I’m going to take it easy with the episode reactions for the rest of the season. Taking copious notes definitely makes watching the episodes less enjoyable, and then I put a lot of stress on myself to write a worthy review/recap. I love this show a lot, and I’d rather enjoy it and talk about it more casually than go all out and turn each episode into a slog. Besides, the main point of these articles is that they’re a chance to interact with y’all and chat about my favorite show on TV. And since, in all honesty, only a few people read these regularly (they know who they are, and I hope they know how much I appreciate them!) I don’t want SHIELD to dominate the time I spend on my blog. Having said all of that, the spring premiere gave us a look at the show’s new direction now that some loose ends have been tied up, as well as teasing some of the larger conflicts to come throughout the rest of the season. So let’s jump into “Bouncing Back” written by Monica Owusu-Breen and directed by Ron Underwood (whom I just found out directed Tremors! Who knew?).

Recap: Agents of SHIELD – “Many Heads, One Tale”

Things are moving pretty quickly on Agents of SHIELD these days. Last week seemingly dealt with the Lash problem for the time being, only for it to pop back up again this week. We got the truth about Rosalind and the ATCU, more of Ward’s plan for HYDRA, and some new clues to Powers Boothe’s Gideon, all tied together with a new threat to SHIELD and humanity. Oh, and perhaps the most important FitzSimmons moment yet! Things are building rapidly towards the midseason finale (just two more episodes!), so let’s get right into “Many Heads, One Tale” written by Jed Whedon and DJ Doyle and directed by Garry A. Brown.

Recap: Agents of SHIELD – “Chaos Theory”

Agents of SHIELD has really ratcheted up the excitement lately. Last week gave us a big “surprise” twist, and this week we saw the fallout from that revelation. And while I may have seen the previous twist coming, I was not at all prepared for the final scene of this week’s episode, which changed everything. Combine that with some superpowered action, more emotional developments for FitzSimmons, and finally some answers on Lash and his motivations, and I think it’s safe to say that SHIELD is really hitting its stride this season. So let’s find out all about what happened to Andrew in “Chaos Theory” written by Lauren LeFranc and directed by David Solomon.

Recap: Agents of SHIELD – “Among Us Hide…”

We returned to business as usual this week on Agents of SHIELD, after last week’s thrilling, emotional, bold, and unique episode that finally gave us the story of what happened to Simmons on that alien world. But for its 50th episode, SHIELD gave us some huge developments on several storylines and for several characters, including one major twist that some of us might have seen coming. Season three is moving along quickly, but I haven’t quite decided where I think things are headed. There are a lot of storylines in play at the moment, with only glimpses of how they all tie together, but I’m excited to see where things head next. So let’s jump into the exciting “Among Us Hide…” written by Drew Z. Greenberg and directed by Dwight Little.

Simmons - "4,722 Hours"

Set the confrontations, revelations, and potential deaths of last week’s exciting episode, because this week gave us perhaps the best Agents of SHIELD episode ever! “4,722 Hours” finally showed us what happened to Simmons after she was sucked into the monolith in an episode that was dramatic, exciting, scary, heartbreaking, and highly emotional, with constantly unexpected twists and turns that will no doubt have a huge impact on the season ahead. It was one of the boldest episodes imaginable, completely unlike anything we’ve seen from the show before, and it was all anchored by an absolutely stunning performance by Elizabeth Henstridge. So let’s go ahead and get sucked into the portal of “4,722 Hours”, written by Craig Titley and directed by Jesse Bochco.

Recap: Agents of SHIELD – “Devils You Know”

Devils You Know

This week on Agents of SHIELD we got some new revelations, major confrontations, and even a possible death, all set up by last week’s “step forward” episode. This episode had a bit of everything, from Inhumans and the ATCU to the reappearance of Lash, to Hunter and May’s quest to stop Ward, to Simmons’ recovery and secret mission. We also have a couple of new mysteries to keep us guessing in the coming weeks! SHIELD is moving along at a pretty quick pace this season, but I think we’re still a little in the dark as to where the season is ultimately heading. But let’s see what we can discover in this week’s SHIELD, “Devils You Know,” written by Paul Zbyszewski and directed by Ron Underwood.

FitzSimmons - A Wanted (Inhu)man

There was no way this week’s Agents of SHIELD episode could live up to last week’s emotional, surprising, and intense level. Rather than try to top it, the writers this week wisely gave us one of those “Everyone take one step forward” episodes, in which almost every storyline established thus far this season saw some advancement. In addition to dealing with the fallout from last week’s dramatic events, we saw more of Hunter and May’s quest to hunt down Ward, we caught up with Lincoln, now on the run, Coulson and his team had another run-in with the ATCU, all with a few twists, surprises, and revelations along the way. So let’s dive in to “A Wanted (Inhu)man”, written by Monica Owusu-Breen and directed by Garry A. Brown.

Recap: Agents of SHIELD – “Purpose in the Machine”

Fitz and Mack in "Purpose in the Machine"

It’s great when a TV show can surprise you. It’s even better when a show can surprise you with the very plot development you knew was inevitable, simply by the way the story was told and the timing of events. Agents of SHIELD pulled off just such a surprise this week by giving us something I knew would happen eventually but so soon in week two. Last week we got an early glimpse at some of the ongoing storylines for season three with the introduction of Lash, the ATCU, and Daisy’s search for Inhumans. This week brought back May and Ward, missing from the previous episode, as well as a guest star from season one, all while solving some mysteries only to leave more behind. Throw some major emotions into the mix and I couldn’t be more excited about the direction season 3 is headed. So let’s jump into “Purpose in the Machine”, written by DJ Doyle and directed by Kevin Tancharoen.
