Quote of the Day

There are many difficult things in this world to hide, but a secret is not one of them.  It is difficult to hide an airplane, for instance, because you generally need to find a deep hole or an enormous haystack, and sneak the airplane inside in the middle of the night, but it is easy to hide a secret about an airplane, because you can merely write it on a tiny piece of paper and tape it to the bottom of your mattress any time you are at home.  It is difficult to hide a symphony orchestra, because you usually need to rent a soundproof room and borrow as many sleeping bags as you can find, but it easy to hide a secret about a symphony orchestra, because you can merely whisper it into the ear of a trustworthy friend or music critic.  And it is difficult to hide yourself, because you sometimes need to stuff yourself into the trunk of an automobile, or concoct a disguise out of whatever you can find, but it is easy to hide a secret about yourself, because you can merely type it into a book and hope it falls into the right hands.  My dear sister, if you are reading this, I am still alive, and heading north to try and find you.

Trailer Thursday: Tomorrowland

First glimpse of Tomorrowland

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I’ve been looking forward to Tomorrowland for well over a year.  Ever since director Brad Bird tweeted a picture of a mysterious box from the Disney Archives in January of last year, I’ve been mildly obsessed with the film (for reasons I’ll get to after talking about the trailer).  Out of seemingly nowhere today, we finally got our first look at footage from the film (due out May 22, 2015) in a quick teaser trailer.  I got more than a little emotional watching it, but that may just have been from personal reasons.  Take a look at the trailer below, and read on for a breakdown of it and my thoughts:

Quark: You’re not exactly the most lovable person in the galaxy. You’re not even the most lovable person in this sector… or on the station… or even in this room.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Season 6: Episode 20 – “His Way”

Recap: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – “Making Friends and Influencing People”

Melinda May, Skye, "Making Friends and Influencing People"

Agents of SHIELD keeps putting out great episodes this season.  Last week’s wrap-up to the season premiere was a great one, giving us some solid character development while helping to feed some of the key mysteries that have been set up for this season.  This week, the mysteries and the Obelisk were set aside as we finally learned what Simmons has been up to.  We also got some stellar acting from Ian De Caestecker, who is the MVP of season 2 thus far, and a look at how all of our characters have changed and progressed since last season, and how the family dynamic of the team has shifted.  We also saw the return of one of last season’s dangling threads, perhaps setting the stage for more returning characters from last year.  So without further ado, let’s jump into “Making Friends and Influencing People” written by Monica Owusu-Breen and directed by Bobby Roth.

Quote of the Day

“I am not being ridiculous,” said Lupin steadily. “Tonks deserves somebody young and whole.”
“But she wants you,” said Mr. Weasley, with a small smile. “And after all, Remus, young and whole men do not necessarily remain so.”
He gestured sadly at his son, lying between them.
“This is . . . Not the moment to discuss it,” said Lupin, avoiding everybody’s eyes as he looked around distractedly. “Dumbledore is dead. . . .”
“Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world,” said Professor McGonagall curtly.

Instant Reaction: Agents of SHIELD – “Making Friends and Influencing People”

*Update: My full recap of “Making Friends and Influencing People” is now live.  Read it here!

If tonight’s SHIELD episode gave us a closer look at what we can expect on a weekly basis from the show this season, then I’m excited to see what’s yet to come.  After last week helped wrap up the season premiere, this week we got more of a stand-alone episode that still helped to advance the story SHIELD is telling.  We got the return of (the real) Simmons, some new revelations, some new mysteries, and a good helping of suspense.  So read on for my instant reactions to the episode, and check back tomorrow for my full recap of the “Making Friends and Influencing People” (I’ll post a link here once it’s up).

Quote of the Day

Giles asks out a chair

Giles:  W-w-w-what I’m proposing is, um… and I-I don’t mean to appear indecorous, is, is, um, a, a-a-a social engagement, um, a, a, a, a-a date, if you’re amenable. … You idiot!

Buffy:  Boy…I guess we never realized how much you like that chair.

Giles:  I-I-I was just working on…

Buffy:  Your pickup lines?

Giles:  Um, in a manner of speaking, yes.

Buffy:  Then if you wouldn’t mind a little Gene and Roger, you might wanna leave off the ‘idiot’ part. Being called an idiot tends to take people out of the dating mood.

Xander:  Hmm, it actually kinda turns me on.

Buffy:  I fear you. You also might wanna avoid words like ‘amenable’ and ‘indecorous’, y’know. Speak English, not whatever they speak in, um…

Giles:  England?

Buffy:  Yeah. You just say, ‘Hey, I got a thing, you maybe have a thing, maybe we could have a thing.’

Giles:  Oh, thank you, Cyrano.

Buffy:  I’m not finished. Then you say, ‘How do you feel about Mexican?’

Giles:  About Mexicans?

Buffy:  Mexican. Food. You take her for food, for which you then pay.

Giles:  Oh. Right.

Xander:  So this chair-woman. We are talking Ms. Calendar, right?

Giles:  W-what makes you think that?

Xander:  Simple deduction. Ms. Calendar is reasonably dollsome, especially for someone in your age bracket. She already knows that you’re a school librarian, so you don’t have to worry about how to break that embarrassing news to her.

Buffy:  And she’s the only woman we’ve actually ever seen speak to you. Add it all up and it all spells ‘duh’.

Xander:  Now, is it time to have a talk about the facts of life?

Giles:  You know, I’m suddenly deciding this is none of your business.

Xander:  Y’know, because that whole stork thing is a smoke screen.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2: Episode 2 – “Some Assembly Required”

Quote of the Day

Miracles are like meatballs, because nobody can exactly agree what they are made of, where they come from, or how often they should appear.  Some people say that a sunrise is a miracle, because it is somewhat mysterious and often very beautiful, but other people say it is simply a fact of life, because it happens every day and far too early in the morning.  Some people say that a telephone is a miracle, because it sometimes seems wondrous that you can talk with somebody who is thousands of miles away, and other people say it is simply a manufactured device fashioned out of metal parts, electric circuitry, and wires that are very easily cut.  And some people say that sneaking out of a hotel is a miracle, particularly if the lobby is swarming with policemen, and other people say it is simply a fact of life, because it happens every day and far too early in the morning.  So you might think that there are so many miracles in the world that you scarcely count them, or that there are so few that they’re scarcely worth mentioning, depending on whether you spend your mornings gazing at a beautiful sunset or lowering yourself into a back alley with a rope fashioned out of matching towels.

Quote of the Day

Julian Bashir: You promised me that you wouldn’t go kayaking again until your shoulder had a chance to heal.

Miles O’Brien: I know; but I can’t stay away. It’s like the river calls to me.

Julian Bashir: Yes, it’s saying “Stay away, don’t come near me, or I’ll hurt you more!”
