Trailer Tuesday: Home

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

While I often feature trailers for animated movies here on Trailer Tuesday, I don’t usually highlight so-called “kids’ movies.”  Animation is a medium, not a genre nor an indicator of a film’s target audience.  We’re long past the days where animation=cartoons, and nothing frustrates me more than people who refuse to see something simply because it’s animated and therefore in their mind a “kids’ movie.”  However it is true that some movies, both animated and otherwise, are squarely targeted at kids, and while they don’t make a frequent appearance here on Trailer Tuesday occasionally they catch my interest.  So take a look at the trailer for Home, and read on for my comments.

Trailer Tuesday: Earth to Echo

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

Normally here on Trailer Tuesday I like to do a deep dive into an individual trailer for a movie, with screencaps and some thoughts/analysis of what that trailer holds.  But every now and then, I prefer instead to show you all of the trailers for one film in one post, hopefully giving a broader view of a film instead of a deeper one.  So today, take a look at the three trailers for Earth to Echo, which comes out July 2:

Trailer Tuesday: Big Hero 6

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

Last week we looked at the latest trailer for Marvel’s next movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.  This week, we’ve got our first teaser trailer for the Marvel movie that’s coming after Guardians.  No, it’s not Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s Big Hero 6, an animated film from Disney Animation Studios based on the Marvel comics of the same name.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts.

Trailer Tuesday: Guardians of the Galaxy (Trailer #2)

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

It’s been three months since we got our first, crazy look at Guardians of the Galaxy, and we finally got a second trailer yesterday (along with this new poster, which lacks the perfect “You’re Welcome” tagline from the previous poster).  The second trailer for a film like this is always the one that gives us the best look at the film.  By this time, more of the visual effects have been completed, more dialogue has been recorded, and the trailer takes a deeper look at the film’s story.  The first trailer’s goal was to establish the film’s unique tone and give us an intro to the characters, but this time around we got to see a lot more.  Take a look at the trailer below and read on for my thoughts and highlights:

Trailer Thursday: Cinderella

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

When you see the poster above, what story immediately comes to mind?  Disney is banking on the fact that Cinderella’s glass slipper is such a recognizable image that that’s all they need to show to get people excited for the film.  In fact, that same iconic image is carried over into their first teaser trailer.  Check it out below and then read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: Star Wars Rebels

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

After saying last week that I rarely do TV trailers, here I am again with another one, although this one is much more exciting.  After Disney bought Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars, many people wondered what would happen to the wildly successful animated series, The Clone Wars, which aired on Cartoon Network.  The somewhat disappointing but unsurprising answer is that The Clone Wars was brought to a conclusion, and a new animated series was announced, Star Wars Rebels, which will air on Disney XD in the fall.  The trailer premiered this weekend on “Star Wars Day,” although it’s probably been a little eclipsed by other recent Star Wars news.  Take a look and read on for my thoughts below:

Trailer Tuesday: Crossbones

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I don’t normally do TV trailers on here, mostly because despite watching lots (too much) of TV, I’m just not into it the way I am with movies.  There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking movies are where my heart lies.  Having said that, I can’t ignore a new show about pirates, given my obsession with all things pirate-related.  So here’s the trailer for NBC’s upcoming summer TV series, Crossbones, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Jersey Boys

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

I’m a big fan of stage musicals, I’ve seen a lot of shows on Broadway and countless others on tour, and I also happen to be a Four Seasons/Frankie Valli fan, yet somehow I’ve never managed to see Jersey Boys.  (Though, interestingly, it’s coming to my town in just a couple months.)  I was very excited when I heard that they were adapting the Tony Award-winning musical into a film.  But when I first watched the trailer I wasn’t nearly as excited as I thought I would be.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Giver

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

The Giver, by Lois Lowry, came out when I was 9 years old, and I think may be the only person my age who didn’t read it.  I’m not sure how I missed it, as I read a lot and even had a copy of it, but somehow I never got around to it.  So I was more than a little intrigued by the trailer for long-awaited film adaptation and by the reaction of fans of the book.  Based on what I’ve read, I think it’s safe to say that this may not be the most faithful film adaptation in recent years.  Take a look at the trailer below, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Thursday: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

Here’s the thing, I absolutely love the 1990 film version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  I watched the VHS obsessively and it was one of the first films I completely memorized.  I had all of the action figures, watched the cartoon every day, and was a Ninja Turtle twice for Halloween (Michelangelo and Donatello).  But above all the other Turtle-related things, the film was what cemented my attachment to the characters.  It was dark and unique, funny and emotional, with a great cast and some truly impressive design work.  It was also very New York.  The Jim Henson-created Turtles will always be the perfect incarnation of the four brothers, and are what I immediately picture whenever they’re mentioned.

So it’s more than a little understandable that when Michael Bay announced that he was rebooting the series I was not happy.  Michael Bay has had a wildly successful career, and has actually made some genuinely good movies, but he is in no way the person I want involved with the Ninja Turtles.  Add in his comments that the Turtles would be aliens (a statement he has since retracted) and his casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil and things started to look pretty grim.  So I was prepared to hate the new trailer that debuted today.  Imagine my surprise when I came away with some mixed feelings after all.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:
