What I want to see from tomorrow’s Oscar nominations
The Oscar nominations will be announced tomorrow morning, and while I try every year to predict the winners I won’t even attempt to try to guess the nominees. However, I do have some things I would like to see when the nominations are announced tomorrow. I’ve divided these into two categories: actual, genuine “Possibilities” and “Not a Chance”. I may be hopeful, but I try to keep things at least moderately realistic. I’ve left out some of the more obvious ones, like Gravity for Best Picture, Director, Actress and all of the technical categories, simply because I think that they’re foregone conclusions and I’m not really sweating them. Come back later tomorrow after the nominations have been announced (and I’ve gotten home and can actually write about them) for some quick thoughts on who made the cut and who was left out. In the meantime, read on for the names and films I would like to hear Chris Hemsworth read outtomorrow. Continue reading
Review/Analysis: In a World…
In a World… is funny, random, charmingly sweet, a little romantic and an impressive feature length writing, producing and directing debut by star Lake Bell. It’s also strongly feminist, but in a way that feels realistic while still sending a clear message. The film, which was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Carol Solomon, a struggling vocal coach whose father, Sam Soto, is one of the famous kings of the movie trailer voice-over industry. You would think with a father who is a legend in the industry that Carol would have an easy way into the business, too, but her father not only is uninterested in giving her handouts (which his therapist tells him is just enabling Carol) but also doesn’t think women have any place in the industry. It’s a boy’s only club, with Sam spending his time and energy promoting sleazeball Guztav Warner as the next generation of voice over powerhouse instead of his own daughter. Sam makes his opinions clear to Carol before kicking her out of the house so that Sam’s groupie girlfriend can move in instead (nevermind the fact that she’s a year younger than his daughter.)
So Carol moves in with her sister and brother-in-law, Continue reading
Trailer Tuesday: In a World…
Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.
In my opinion, there aren’t enough women in Hollywood who are creating movies. Sure, there are the Tina Fey’s and Amy Poehler’s and Kristen Wiig’s who write their own material, but it’s not nearly enough. Enter Lake Bell, and In a World… Take a look:
In a World… premiered at Sundance and received positive reviews. The trailer has the quirky style you expect from an indie comedy. As the main character’s father says, “I just love that, it’s so random.” Lake Bell wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film as Carol, the daughter of a famous trailer voiceover performer (think Don LaFontaine), who wants to follow in her father’s footsteps, despite it being a male dominated industry.
