Trailer Tuesday: Muppets Most Wanted

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I think even Disney was surprised by the success of 2011’s The Muppets.  It revitalized the brand in a way that was unexpected considering the straight-to-DVD languishing that the Muppets had been suffering in recent years.  Having a big name writer in Jason Segel and cult favorite Bret McKenzie to write the songs helped, but more than that I think people were eager for a real return of the Muppets they knew.  The story had a clever setup, using new character Walter as a way to remind people what they loved about the Muppets, and it was full of stars either in cameos or full roles.  (It’s the best film Jack Black has been in in a long time.)  But beyond that, The Muppets captured the essence of the Muppets, that crazy, surrealist energy that only a band of misfits could have.  It’s too early to tell whether the sequel, Muppets Most Wanted, can recapture that magic, but take a look at the first teaser trailer:

I could listen to Animal yelling out “Sequel” and other random words all day long.   Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Last Vegas

If RED and RED 2 were supposed to be “James Bond with senior citizens”, then Last Vegas is “The Hangover with senior citizens.”  Take a look and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I’m not a Ben Stiller fan.  I tolerate him in a few things (Dodgeball, Tropic Thunder) but I only really enjoy him in The Royal Tenenbaums.  Also, I’ve never read “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber.  So imagine my surprise when I saw this trailer before a screening of The Wolverine, and was fascinated by it.  As things currently stand, I’m really looking forward to this.  Take a look, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Austenland

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

Jane Austen has been in the news a lot lately (see the horror that is this and the awesomeness that is this), so it’s fitting that Austenland is due to be released next month.  Take a look at the trailer, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

This weekend at Comic-con saw the release of a new trailer for Catching Fire, the upcoming sequel to last year’s The Hunger Games.  I covered the first trailer back in April, but watch the new one and then read on for my thoughts:

We get a lot of new footage in this trailer, mixed in with some things we’ve seen before, so let’s take it from the top. Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Saving Mr. Banks

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

It’s been torture, having to wait until today to share this trailer with you.  I’ll save my thoughts for after, so go ahead and watch:

My obsession with all things Disney should be well know by this point to anyone who regularly reads this blog. Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: R.I.P.D.

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

For today’s Trailer Tuesday I was going to do Austenland, but I couldn’t find a version of the trailer that I could embed here (so look for that sometime soon).  Instead, today you’re going to get R.I.P.D., the supernatural comedy coming on July 19.  Take a look, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Lone Ranger

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

During my movie marathon a couple weeks ago, I saw a trailer for The Lone Ranger (out tomorrow) before my showing of Man of Steel.  There’s nothing unusual about this, and I fully expected it, but what I didn’t expect was this unusual take on a trailer instead of something more typical.  Take a look, and then read on for my thoughts:

Instead of a standard trailer we instead got a behind-the-scenes look at the film.   Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Frozen

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

Those of you who saw Monsters University were probably treated to this small teaser for the upcoming Disney Animation film, Frozen.  Frozen is a retelling of “The Snow Queen,” a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson.  It features the voice talents of Kristen Bell (sloths!), Idina Menzel, Alan Tudyk and Jonathan Groff.  It’s also a musical, with songs written by Robert Lopez (songwriter for Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon and the Scrubs musical episode) and his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

The trailer is just a simple tease, though it does a lot to evoke the most popular characters from Tangled, Maximus the horse and Pascal the chameleon.  It may not tell us much, but it sure is cute!  Take a look: Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: In a World…

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

In my opinion, there aren’t enough women in Hollywood who are creating movies.  Sure, there are the Tina Fey’s and Amy Poehler’s and Kristen Wiig’s who write their own material, but it’s not nearly enough.  Enter Lake Bell, and In a World…  Take a look:

In a World… premiered at Sundance and received positive reviews.  The trailer has the quirky style you expect from an indie comedy.  As the main character’s father says, “I just love that, it’s so random.”  Lake Bell wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film as Carol, the daughter of a famous trailer voiceover performer (think Don LaFontaine), who wants to follow in her father’s footsteps, despite it being a male dominated industry.
