Sometimes a trailer comes out that is so bad it’s mind boggling that the film was ever made. I get the appeal. People love Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and I’m sure some executive thought this would make a lot of money. After all, Identity Thief made $174 million dollars. Take a look:

When Joss Whedon announced that he had secretly filmed an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing with his acting troupe at his house as part of a stay-at-home vacation, I freaked out. I wasn’t alone in this either. The idea of Whedon doing Shakespeare is perfectly brilliant. We should have all known it was bound to happen, considering the references to the Bard in his shows and films (“We few, we happy few…” “We band of buggered.”). But too bad, because I could not be more excited about S.H.I.E.L.D., the expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which continues the story from The Avengers and is being overseen by the incomparable Joss Whedon. Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.
I’m a Trekkie and I have to be honest: I didn’t like 2009’s Star Trek. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it was pretty enjoyable, had a solid cast, I love seeing Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and I’m a big J.J. Abrams fan (Super 8 is a masterpiece). But it did not feel at all like Star Trek to me. I thought the time travel/parallel universe story was a cheap way for the writers to be able to sidestep history, I thought the movie was far too dumbed-down so as to appeal to modern audiences, and they completely screwed up the Kobayashi Maru sequence.
So I feel a bit of trepidation when I see the trailers for the new film, Star Trek Into Darkness. Take a look and then read on for my thoughts:
