Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where we look at trailers for upcoming movies.
Most Trailer Tuesdays I post a trailer along with a bunch of screencaps that either highlight interesting moments from the trailer or which show off the film’s visuals. However, not every film I want to bring your attention to needs that level of analysis or imagery. So today we’ve got a trailer that speaks for itself with its excellent cast and interesting subject matter. So without further ado, here’s the trailer for Pride:

The Mad Max films form one of the most bizarre trilogies out there. A product of the unique mind of George Miller (known more these days for the Babe and Happy Feet movies), each film had a drastically different style and feel. The first film, Mad Max, is the darkest of the three, with its tragic story and its nihilistic style, and it helped introduce the world to Mel Gibson. The second film, The Road Warrior, is an absolute masterpiece, possibly the greatest pure action film of all time, whose chase sequence is one of the most pulse-pounding and electrifying sequences ever put on film. The final film, Beyond Thunderdome, is almost too strange to describe, with Tina Turner overseeing a town powered by pig methane where arguments are settled in the craziest of cage matches (“Two men enter, one man leaves!”), and a group of abandoned teenagers who think Max is a prophet.
So it’s almost impossible to have any idea what to expect from Mad Max: Fury Road. I’m thrilled that George Miller is back behind the wheel, as there’s no one else to whom I would trust a new film, but I’m conflicted since Mel Gibson won’t be returning. On the one hand that’s probably a good thing, as the thought of watching an older Gibson try to revive his career by returning to his roots isn’t appealing, but on the other hand he was Max and I’m not eager to see him replaced. And then of course there’s the troubled production, which has been an ongoing story for years. But if this first trailer is anything to go by, we’re in for one hell of a ride with Fury Road. The final film in The Hobbit trilogy is approaching. It has a new subtitle, The Battle of the Five Armies, which replaces the earlier title There and Back Again. And until they come up with a way to turn The Silmarillion into a series of films or they decide to make The Ongoing Adventures of Legolas and Gimli (which I would totally watch), this will be the final film in Peter Jackson’s epic Middle Earth saga, comprising six movies over 13 years. And now we’ve got the first teaser trailer for this final film. Take a look, and read on for my thoughts below:

I’ve actually got two new trailers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 for you today. First up is a followup to the previous teaser, which showed President Snow giving an address to Panem with Peeta surprisingly by his side. He’s once again addressing the nation with Peeta beside him, but this time he has another guest and things have a remarkably different tone even before the surprise at the end of the address. Take a look and read on for my comments and the first full teaser trailer for Mockingjay – Part 1.

A couple months ago we got our first look at Big Hero 6, the upcoming collaboration between Marvel and Walt Disney Animation Studios, in the form of a cute teaser trailer. We’ve now got a new, bigger trailer, as well as finally some confirmed information about the voice cast. Watch the trailer below and read on for my thoughts:

I’ve posted a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy since we got our first glimpse of it, and that’s not about to stop now. Today we’ve got three “final” trailers for the film, the first of which is actually a “viral” commercial for a Galaxy Getaways, while the second and the third are “extended looks” at the film. At this point, I doubt they could show us much more of the movie without delving into serious spoilers, and even some of these may be pushing the limit of how much people want to know before they see a film. They also give us a much better glimpse at the emotions and the characters of the film, along with several more complete scenes instead of just isolated clips. But let’s start with Galaxy Getaways

It’s interesting how many trailers have been released for The Boxtrolls. In addition to the two teaser trailers from earlier in the year there’s now a third teaser trailer and the first full trailer for the film. These two use a lot of the same footage, but the teaser trailer is shorter and set to Cee Lo’s version of “(You’re So Square) Baby I Don’t Care,” originally made famous by Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly, a perfect song choice, while the full trailer gives us more of an idea about the film’s story.

Some trailers try to sell you on an entertaining premise, loading two minutes with jokes or explosions or scares. Others, however, are built to simply scream “Oscar bait!” as loudly as possible. They typically appear around this time of year in anticipation of movies coming out in the last three months of the year. Oscar bait trailers usually highlight their impressive casts, are often about family drama, and frequently revolve around a death. Here’s the first one I’ve seen so far this year:

Here on the Ship’s Log I usually feature trailers that strike my interest in some way, either by promoting a film that looks exciting to me or by using an interesting technique within the trailer itself. Sometimes, however, a trailer will leave me shaking my head, rolling my eyes, or snorting with derisive laughter. Take a look at this:

Today’s trailer is a fun one that really caught my attention when I saw it for the first time in the theater a month ago. Take a look and read on for my thoughts:
