Thoughts on the end of Once Upon a Time’s 3rd Season

Last night’s season 3 finale of Once Upon a Time hit me harder than anything on the show since its first season.  Despite religiously watching the show, I’ve never written about it, but after last night I felt that I had to, as I had a much stronger emotional reaction than I could have expected, particularly in its last minute reveal that sets the stage for season 4.  I want to use this moment to take a look back at the series thus far, and perhaps discover why this new development hit me so hard.  Needless to say, there will be spoilers for the show thus far, although I’ll give another, specific spoiler warning for last night’s episode when I get to that point.

Once Upon a Time was clearly a show designed to appeal to me.  Continue reading

Quote of the Day

Giles:  We’re at the center of a mystical convergence here. We may, in fact, stand between the Earth and its total destruction.

Buffy:  Well, I gotta look on the bright side. Maybe I can still get kicked out of school!

Xander:  Oh, yeah, that’s a plan. ‘Cause lots of schools aren’t on Hellmouths.

Willow:  Maybe you could blow something up. They’re really strict about that.

Buffy:  I was thinking of a more subtle approach, y’know, like excessive not studying.

Giles:  The Earth is doomed!

Quote of the Day

The book you are holding in your two hands right now—assuming that you are, in fact, holding this book, and that you have only two hands—is one of the two books in the world that will show you the difference between the word “nervous” and the word “anxious.”  The other book, of course, is the dictionary, and if I were you I would read that book instead.

Like this book, the dictionary shows you that the word “nervous” means “worried about something”—you might feel nervous, for instance, if you were served prune ice cream for dessert, because you would be worried that it would taste awful—whereas the word “anxious” means “troubled by disturbing suspense,” which you might feel if you were served a live alligator for dessert, because you would be troubled by the disturbing suspense about whether you would eat your dessert or it would eat you.  But unlike this book, the dictionary also discusses words that are far more pleasant to contemplate.  The word “bubble” is in the dictionary, for instance, as is the word “peacock,” the word “vacation,” and the words “the” “author’s” “execution” “has” “been” “canceled,” which make up a sentence that is always pleasant to hear.  So if you were to read the dictionary, rather than this book, you could skip the parts about “nervous” and “anxious” and read about things that wouldn’t keep you up all night long, weeping and tearing out your hair.

Quote of the Day

Quark: What you need is a Ferengi.

Jadzia Dax: Maybe. But what I want is Worf.

Julian Bashir: Why?

Jadzia Dax: Because he has the courage of a berserker cat, and he has the heart of a poet.

Quark: And the brain of a pig-headed idiot.

Jadzia Dax: Yeah, sometimes.

Review: The Grand Budapest Hotel

I’ve been trying to write a review of The Grand Budapest Hotel for over a month, but it’s given me an unusual amount of trouble.  It has made me curious about what this very specific writer’s block means in terms of my opinion of the film.  I certainly enjoyed it, as I’ve enjoyed all Wes Anderson films, but it seems like I just don’t have much to say about it.  My overriding opinion from a review standpoint is that if you like Wes Anderson’s other movies, you’ll like The Grand Budapest Hotel, if you dislike them then you’ll want to skip it, and if you’re indifferent it’s worth checking out but probably not as worthy of attention as some of Anderson’s other works.

Quote of the Day

Harry proceeded through deserted corridors, though he had to step hastily behind a statue when professor Trelawny appeared around a corner, muttering to herself as she shuffled a pack of dirty-looking playing cards, reading them as she walked.

“Two of spades: conflict,” she murmured, as she passed the place where Harry crouched, hidden.  “Seven of spades: an ill omen.  Ten of spades: violence.  Knave of spades: a dark young man, possibly troubled, one who dislikes the questioner —”

She stopped dead, right on the other side of Harry’s statue.

“Well, that can’t be right,” she said, annoyed, and Harry heard her reshuffling vigorously as she set off again, leaving nothing but a whiff of cooking sherry behind her.

Friday Favorites: Favorite Speech – Jaws

Welcome to “Friday Favorites” which highlight some of my favorite movie-related things.

I haven’t done a Friday Favorite in a while, mostly because no one reads them, but I felt in the mood to revive it for at least one more week.  I was recently listening to one of the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcasts which parodied sections of Jaws, and like most references to my favorite films it triggered a lot of emotions and memories about the classic 1975 film.  Jaws is truly a masterpiece, far more than just its legacy of propelling Steven Spielberg to the big time and creating the modern idea of a summer blockbuster.  Some highlights of the film are obvious, from John Williams’ iconic score, to Spielberg’s Hitchcockian vision for the film, to some of the all-time best scares, to lines like “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”  Other things are more subtle, like the genius editing by Verna Fields who does some truly creative things to build tension, or the script’s ability to make a film about a killer shark with the film’s real villain being the town’s mayor.  For me, however, the best part of the film might be this:

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. renewed! Plus, Agent Carter set to premiere this fall!

That’s right, fellow Level 7 Agents, Agents of SHIELD has officially been renewed!  (Update: It’s moving to a new time in the fall!)  I thought we might have to wait until next week for the ABC’s upfront presentation, but the good news came tonight!  After much speculation, Coulson and his team (whoever survives next week’s season finale) will be back in the fall to continue to fight HYDRA and rebuild SHIELD.  After debuting to huge numbers last year, Agents of SHIELD steadily dropped in the ratings, though in the past couple of months viewership steadied and even rallied a bit.  The dramatic tie-in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier really helped, both in drawing attention to the show and in giving the show a creative boost.  The latest string of episodes has been edge-of-your-seat exciting, and I can’t wait to see where they take the show next season.

The other big news on the Marvel front was that the much-rumored Agent Carter series has been picked up for the fall.   Continue reading

Luke:  You forget, metal can’t hurt me.

Buffy:  There’s something you forgot about, too. Sunrise!

[Smashes a window.  Luke cowers.  Buffy stakes him.]

Buffy:  It’s in about nine hours, moron!
