Trailer Tuesday: Grudge Match

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I’m a big fan of the Rocky film series.  The first one is nearly perfect, the next three are all good fun (the less said about the 5th one, the better) and I absolutely love Rocky Balboa, the 6th film in the series which was released in 2006 and featured an aged Rocky returning to the ring to face a young champion based on an ESPN computer simulation.  I also happen to like Raging Bull, the Jake LaMotta biopic by Scorsese which featured a tour de force performance by Robert De Niro.  However, I had no desire to see the two films combine into the travesty of a trailer that I was presented with at the theater this weekend.  Take a look and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I’ve always felt like the second full trailer is always the hardest one for a film to pull off.  Teaser trailers are pretty easy, offering just a glimpse to get people talking, while the first full trailer is generally full of entirely new footage that will excite audiences.  But the second trailer often reuses much of the footage from the first trailer, hitting the same story beats as its predecessor with little new to add.  Often a second trailer will feature a few, specific revelations, trying to keep interest in the film high and promote continued discussion.  We saw the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug a while back, and now we’re presented with the second.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Frozen

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

We have a new trailer for Frozen, which gives us a much bigger look at the film than we got from the teaser trailer from a few months ago.  The question, however, is whether this bigger look is an accurate representation of the final film.  Take a look below and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: Gravity

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

When my wife and I see a new movie trailer, either in the theater or at home, we almost always look at each other afterwards to get an sense of each other’s quick reaction to the trailer.  Usually they’re in sync, as we typically like the same sorts of films.  “Stupid” comedies get an eye roll, horror films usually get a sarcastic yes followed by a determined no, big, loud action movies typically get an indulgent smile and a shake of the head, while many others get a noncommittal shrug or head bob indicating that we need to see more before deciding.  Even when we don’t agree, we usually know what reaction the other one will have before we look, so I wasn’t surprised to see her emphatic no following the first trailer we saw for Gravity.  Take a look at the latest one below, and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: Carrie

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

This is the trailer I intended to share and discuss last week while on vacation, until I encountered problems posting it on my phone.  Take a look at the trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Carrie, and read on for a few thoughts below:

No Trailer Tuesday This Week

Sorry everyone, no Trailer Tuesday this week, since I’m on vacation. I had one written for Carrie, but I couldn’t get the formatting and embedding to work on my phone. I imagine there won’t be a Friday Favorite this week either. Sorry about that, they’ll both be back next week and the quotes of the day will continue uninterrupted.

Trailer Tuesday: Captain Phillips

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

You can tell the summer’s over when the Oscar-bait trailers start showing up more regularly.  While it’s not the first trailer of the pre-awards season, this one seems destined for discussion come January.  Take a look, and read on for my thoughts below:

Captain Phillips tells the true story of the captain of the cargo ship, Maersk Alabama, who was captured by Somali pirates back in 2009.   Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Divergent

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

This past weekend, the first teaser trailer for Divergent premiered.  I enjoyed the book by Veronica Roth and it’s sequel, and am eagerly anticipating the final book in the series, so I’m excited to see how it will translate to the big screen.  Watch the trailer below, and then read on for my thoughts.

This teaser only gives us a vague sense of Divergent Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Muppets Most Wanted

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I think even Disney was surprised by the success of 2011’s The Muppets.  It revitalized the brand in a way that was unexpected considering the straight-to-DVD languishing that the Muppets had been suffering in recent years.  Having a big name writer in Jason Segel and cult favorite Bret McKenzie to write the songs helped, but more than that I think people were eager for a real return of the Muppets they knew.  The story had a clever setup, using new character Walter as a way to remind people what they loved about the Muppets, and it was full of stars either in cameos or full roles.  (It’s the best film Jack Black has been in in a long time.)  But beyond that, The Muppets captured the essence of the Muppets, that crazy, surrealist energy that only a band of misfits could have.  It’s too early to tell whether the sequel, Muppets Most Wanted, can recapture that magic, but take a look at the first teaser trailer:

Trailer Tuesday: Last Vegas

If RED and RED 2 were supposed to be “James Bond with senior citizens”, then Last Vegas is “The Hangover with senior citizens.”  Take a look and read on for my thoughts:
