Trailer Tuesday: The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I was a little ambivalent about the first Amazing Spider-Man movie.  I thought it did a pretty good job of setting its own tone, in order to distinguish itself from the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy that had only recently ended.  Director Mark Webb gave it an indie feel, and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone really helped sell the idea of this new Spider-Man.  I was less interested in the conspiracy background involving Peter Parker’s parents, which I thought was distracting and just a little too much for the movie.  Overall, it was not bad but certainly not great.

Suffice to say, I’m still undecided as to whether or not I want to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters.  And I’m not sure whether this first trailer has made me any more likely to see it.  Take a look below, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Divergent

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found trailers to be endlessly fascinating.

Back in August we got our first look at the film version of Divergent in the form of a teaser trailer.  In the past couple of weeks, a newer, longer version of that trailer has appeared, hitting many of the same beats as the teaser, but with extended looks into the world of Veronica Roth’s books (the trilogy recently came to its conclusion with Allegiant).  Take a look, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Maleficent

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found trailers to be endlessly fascinating.

Recently we got a look at the first teaser trailer for Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Robert Stromberg.  The film is a semi-remake, sort of prequel to Sleeping Beauty, focusing on the evil fairy of the title.  We got our first information about the film back at D23, but this is our first real taste of the film.  Take a look below and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: X-Men: Days of Future Past

Days of Future Past

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found trailers to be endlessly fascinating.

Those of you who saw Thor: The Dark World last weekend were treated to an unusual trailer for the next X-Men movie.  It’s a trailer that’s different than what I expected, which I think serves it well.  Take a look, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found trailers to be endlessly fascinating.

We’ve finally gotten our last trailer for Catching Fire, the 2nd film in the Hunger Games trilogy (or quadrilogy, since they’re splitting the final book into two movies, Harry Potter- and Twilight-style).  The film comes out in just a couple weeks, so check out this brief final tease and read on for my comments below:

Trailer Tuesday (on Wednesday): Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I’m sorry this post is a day late.  I was going to come up with something creative about being out doing my Love Pirate duties, but the reality is that I just didn’t get around to it in time.  However I finally got it done.  As the release of Thor: The Dark World approaches, it’s time for Marvel to start promoting the next film in their Cinematic Universe.  Behold the trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which takes things in a drastically different direction than 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.  Take a look below, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Gravity

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

When my wife and I see a new movie trailer, either in the theater or at home, we almost always look at each other afterwards to get an sense of each other’s quick reaction to the trailer.  Usually they’re in sync, as we typically like the same sorts of films.  “Stupid” comedies get an eye roll, horror films usually get a sarcastic yes followed by a determined no, big, loud action movies typically get an indulgent smile and a shake of the head, while many others get a noncommittal shrug or head bob indicating that we need to see more before deciding.  Even when we don’t agree, we usually know what reaction the other one will have before we look, so I wasn’t surprised to see her emphatic no following the first trailer we saw for Gravity.  Take a look at the latest one below, and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: Divergent

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

This past weekend, the first teaser trailer for Divergent premiered.  I enjoyed the book by Veronica Roth and it’s sequel, and am eagerly anticipating the final book in the series, so I’m excited to see how it will translate to the big screen.  Watch the trailer below, and then read on for my thoughts.

This teaser only gives us a vague sense of Divergent Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Muppets Most Wanted

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

I think even Disney was surprised by the success of 2011’s The Muppets.  It revitalized the brand in a way that was unexpected considering the straight-to-DVD languishing that the Muppets had been suffering in recent years.  Having a big name writer in Jason Segel and cult favorite Bret McKenzie to write the songs helped, but more than that I think people were eager for a real return of the Muppets they knew.  The story had a clever setup, using new character Walter as a way to remind people what they loved about the Muppets, and it was full of stars either in cameos or full roles.  (It’s the best film Jack Black has been in in a long time.)  But beyond that, The Muppets captured the essence of the Muppets, that crazy, surrealist energy that only a band of misfits could have.  It’s too early to tell whether the sequel, Muppets Most Wanted, can recapture that magic, but take a look at the first teaser trailer:

Trailer Tuesday: Last Vegas

If RED and RED 2 were supposed to be “James Bond with senior citizens”, then Last Vegas is “The Hangover with senior citizens.”  Take a look and read on for my thoughts:
