Trailer Tuesday: Annie

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

It’s funny how you might have an initial reaction to a trailer the first time you see it, but after several viewings you start to change your mind.  Sometimes a trailer will knock your socks off, but you see it so often that you start to become bored with it.  Or, as is the case with the remake of Annie coming this Christmas, I was underwhelmed by the trailer the first time I watched it, only to be won over a bit more with each viewing.  I’m still not 100% sold on it, and I still have some concerns, but it’s growing on me.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Transcendence

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

Usually, Trailer Tuesday features a film that I was either excited about before I ever saw the trailer, or a film which gained my interest because of the trailer.  Rarely does it feature one that makes me as ambivalent as Transcendence.  Take a look, and then read on as I debate with myself (like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof) about this movie:

Trailer Wednesday: Guardians of the Galaxy

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

To be honest, I was really worried about Guardians of the Galaxy.  Marvel has been batting a thousand in Phase 2 so far, with Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World huge hits, as well as the success of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and with the interesting and dark-looking Captain America: The Winter Soldier still to come.  But Guardians of the Galaxy was destined to be the hardest sell for the company, given it’s out-there premise and the general lack of familiarity among the public with the comics.  But then they go and give us this new trailer for the film, and as far as I’m concerned they knocked it out of the park.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: The Fault in Our Stars

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

“I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories.  On the one hand, you could sugar coat it, and nothing is too messed up that it can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song.  I like that version as much as the next girl does.  It’s just not the truth.  This is the truth.”  So begins the trailer for one of the most anticipated (and perhaps slightly dreaded) movies of 2014.  For the countless fans who have read the book, I’m sure you’ve already seen this trailer, but for those of us who haven’t read the book (or if you just can’t see the trailer enough times) take a look below and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: The Grand Budapest Hotel

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

People either tend to love or hate Wes Anderson movies.  Even his detractors will probably admit a grudging respect for some of his earlier films (Bottle RocketRushmore, or The Royal Tenenbaums), but he lost some of his early followers as his films got more bizarre (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited).  But recently he has had a bit of a resurgence, and Moonrise Kingdom was considered by many to be his best film yet.  With all that in mind, I give you a trailer you’re likely either to love or hate.  Take a look at The Grand Budapest Hotel, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Maleficent

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.

A while back I featured the first trailer for Disney’s Maleficent, a new take on the story of Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie as the titular villain and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora.  Now we’ve got a new trailer that gives us a better look at the film.  Take a look, and read on for my comments:

Trailer Tuesday: The Boxtrolls

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I love it when a film is creatively marketed.  And I think The Boxtrolls definitely fits the bill.  I know animation is not everyone’s thing, and stop-motion is even less so, but you should definitely watch both of the trailers (below) for this upcoming movie because I can’t recall ever having seen another film marketed in this way.  The first trailer is a clever behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, while the second makes a pretty powerful statement in a casual and awesome way.  Take a look: Continue reading

Trailer Tuesday: Noah

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

I had almost forgotten that writer/director Darren Aronofsky was making a film version of the Noah story until I saw this trailer on the big screen.  After having seen the trailer twice in the theater and several times online I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it.  Take a look for yourself below, and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: How to Train Your Dragon 2

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

2010’s How to Train Your Dragon was something of a surprise hit, making almost half a billion dollars at the box office and getting a couple of Oscar nominations, so a sequel was inevitable (especially when you consider the success of the TV show spinoff).  The first film, very very loosely inspired by the book series by Cressida Cowell, was a fun, funny beautifully animated film, whose plot may not have been overly interesting but which had a firm anchor in the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless.  The new trailer for How to Train Your Dragon 2, highlights that relationship, while trying to amp up the story and show off the visuals.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Trailer Tuesday: Interstellar, Godzilla, Jupiter Ascending and Edge of Tomorrow

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.

Instead of one trailer today, you’re getting four!  There have been a slew of new trailers, all of which are somewhat interesting but none of which are enough to really get me excited.  So instead of either wasting an entire post on each or skipping them altogether, I figured I’d hit as many as I can at once.  Let’s look at the new trailers for Interstellar, GodzillaJupiter Ascending and Edge of Tomorrow.

First up, Interstellar: Continue reading
