Trailer Friday: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

Today’s trailer is a fun one that really caught my attention when I saw it for the first time in the theater a month ago.  Take a look and read on for my thoughts:

Kingsman: The Secret Service seems right up my alley.  My wife and I are big James Bond fans, particularly the early Bond films, which had more humor than the recent ones.  Add to that my love of Colin Firth and you’ve got the recipe for a hit.  In the film, Firth plays a secret agent who recruits a young troublemaker for training and consideration to join the Kingsmen.  They’re the equivalent of modern day knights, according to the trailer.

There are plenty of movies about young men joining secret organizations, but few of them have such a charming cast of mentors and colorful characters that include Michael Caine, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong, Jack Davenport and Samuel L. Jackson.  I don’t know anything about the actor playing the film’s protagonist, Taron Egerton, but with a cast like that around him his abilities almost don’t matter.

The film is directed and co-written by Matthew Vaughn, who brought us X-Men: First ClassKick-Ass and Stardust and is based on the comic book The Secret Service.  He’s filled the trailer with action, including a slick-looking chase across rooftops, but the real charm in the trailer comes from the charm of Colin Firth.  Firth has just the right blend of British class and derisive sarcasm for a role like this.  He has just the right sense of style to land right between the smoothness of James Bond and the high-class style of John Steed from The Avengers (the classic TV series, not the Marvel Avengers).  The film itself may not live up the the general impression I got from the trailer, but this small bite caught my interest and I’m looking forward to seeing more.

What do you think?  Does Kingsman: The Secret Service look like fun?  Where will it shake out on the list of great James Bond parodies/homages?  Are you a Colin Firth fan?  Can you believe he’s never been in an action film before?  Have you ever read the comic book this is based on?  Isn’t the poster (below) cool?  Let me know in the comments!
