Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be endlessly fascinating.
Those of you who saw Monsters University were probably treated to this small teaser for the upcoming Disney Animation film, Frozen. Frozen is a retelling of “The Snow Queen,” a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. It features the voice talents of Kristen Bell (sloths!), Idina Menzel, Alan Tudyk and Jonathan Groff. It’s also a musical, with songs written by Robert Lopez (songwriter for Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon and the Scrubs musical episode) and his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
The trailer is just a simple tease, though it does a lot to evoke the most popular characters from Tangled, Maximus the horse and Pascal the chameleon. It may not tell us much, but it sure is cute! Take a look:

It’s impossible to tell yet whether Frozen will be able to recapture Tangled’s bottled lightning, but the trailer is cute and fun. The ending got a huge laugh from my Monsters University crowd. The animation seems consistent with the styling that Disney Animation has been putting out, though it’s too soon to tell if the level of painterly texture from Tangled can be replicated. Also, no word yet on Kristen Bell’s singing, though obviously Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff have nothing to prove.
What do you think? Are you excited for Frozen? Was the teaser too abstract for you to get any real sense of the film? Would you rather your animated films not be musicals (I know you’re out there)? Is there any way that this can match Tangled? Let me know in the comments!
The trailer starts with the words: ‘from the makers of Tangled and Wreck It Ralph’ but I guess one out of two ain’t bad. You are right about Tangled being bottled lightning and Wreck It Ralph only serves to prove that point. The trailer for this film is more than a little weird, detachable body parts is always going to be a little macbre. This snowman character looks like an odd kiddy version of the ‘take him apart and he’ll put himself back together T-2000’ and has the potential to scupper the film if done wrong. Somehow animated snow demands a greater leap of faith than talking animals (and they didn’t even resort to that in Tangled). Great blog by the way, I’m glad we have found each other.

I actually really enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph, also, so I think they’re two for two (https://lovepirate77.wordpress.com/2012/11/14/review-wreck-it-ralph/). I think there’s a chance for a lot of creativity with the snowman, but it could just end up being silly, we’ll have to wait and see. As for it being weird, I’m a weird guy so that appeals to me.
Thanks for the compliment, your blog is great too! It’s nice to connect with people who share your interests.

Absolutley, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship (best last line of a movie ever) although as I read on I realise that perhaps we don’t agree on everything (http://notlefthandedfilmguide.co.uk/2013/02/10/wreck-it-ralph/) and all the better for it.

Definitely the best last line of a movie ever! And it’s our differences that make life interesting. There’s no debate or discussion if everyone just agrees on everything.
