Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies, since I’ve always found them to be fascinating.
The Giver, by Lois Lowry, came out when I was 9 years old, and I think may be the only person my age who didn’t read it. I’m not sure how I missed it, as I read a lot and even had a copy of it, but somehow I never got around to it. So I was more than a little intrigued by the trailer for long-awaited film adaptation and by the reaction of fans of the book. Based on what I’ve read, I think it’s safe to say that this may not be the most faithful film adaptation in recent years. Take a look at the trailer below, and read on for my thoughts:

Here’s the thing, I absolutely love the 1990 film version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I watched the VHS obsessively and it was one of the first films I completely memorized. I had all of the action figures, watched the cartoon every day, and was a Ninja Turtle twice for Halloween (Michelangelo and Donatello). But above all the other Turtle-related things, the film was what cemented my attachment to the characters. It was dark and unique, funny and emotional, with a great cast and some truly impressive design work. It was also very New York. The Jim Henson-created Turtles will always be the perfect incarnation of the four brothers, and are what I immediately picture whenever they’re mentioned.
So it’s more than a little understandable that when Michael Bay announced that he was rebooting the series I was not happy. Michael Bay has had a wildly successful career, and has actually made some genuinely good movies, but he is in no way the person I want involved with the Ninja Turtles. Add in his comments that the Turtles would be aliens (a statement he has since retracted) and his casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil and things started to look pretty grim. So I was prepared to hate the new trailer that debuted today. Imagine my surprise when I came away with some mixed feelings after all. Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

We’ve gotten what will probably be the final trailer for Maleficent, now that the film is just two months away, and this final trailer goes deeper into the story we’re going to see, while giving us some new looks as well. The first trailer mostly focused on the film’s imagery, while telling us little about the movie itself. The second trailer gave us a bit more, while highlighting the parallels between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty. But this final trailer is the one that for the first time has lead me to being genuinely excited about the film, beyond the curiosity that had held my interest thus far, though I fully admit that it may just be the dragon that’s gotten my attention. It’s funny how you might have an initial reaction to a trailer the first time you see it, but after several viewings you start to change your mind. Sometimes a trailer will knock your socks off, but you see it so often that you start to become bored with it. Or, as is the case with the remake of Annie coming this Christmas, I was underwhelmed by the trailer the first time I watched it, only to be won over a bit more with each viewing. I’m still not 100% sold on it, and I still have some concerns, but it’s growing on me. Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

Usually, Trailer Tuesday features a film that I was either excited about before I ever saw the trailer, or a film which gained my interest because of the trailer. Rarely does it feature one that makes me as ambivalent as Transcendence. Take a look, and then read on as I debate with myself (like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof) about this movie:

I have to say I’m intrigued by the Veronica Mars film coming out next month. I’ve never watched the show, although I’m familiar with its premise of a high school girl who works as a private investigator with the help of her detective father. And I’ve heard great things about the show, and I know lots of people love it, as is evidenced by the film’s success at using Kickstarter for funding. Kristen Bell seems like a fun and likable actress, and I’ve enjoyed her in the few things I’ve seen her in. So suffice to say I’m at least curious about going to see a film adaptation of a tv series I’ve never watched. Take a look at the trailer below and read on for my thoughts.

To be honest, I was really worried about Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel has been batting a thousand in Phase 2 so far, with Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World huge hits, as well as the success of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and with the interesting and dark-looking Captain America: The Winter Soldier still to come. But Guardians of the Galaxy was destined to be the hardest sell for the company, given it’s out-there premise and the general lack of familiarity among the public with the comics. But then they go and give us this new trailer for the film, and as far as I’m concerned they knocked it out of the park. Take a look below and read on for my thoughts:

“I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories. On the one hand, you could sugar coat it, and nothing is too messed up that it can’t be fixed with a Peter Gabriel song. I like that version as much as the next girl does. It’s just not the truth. This is the truth.” So begins the trailer for one of the most anticipated (and perhaps slightly dreaded) movies of 2014. For the countless fans who have read the book, I’m sure you’ve already seen this trailer, but for those of us who haven’t read the book (or if you just can’t see the trailer enough times) take a look below and read on for my comments:

People either tend to love or hate Wes Anderson movies. Even his detractors will probably admit a grudging respect for some of his earlier films (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, or The Royal Tenenbaums), but he lost some of his early followers as his films got more bizarre (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited). But recently he has had a bit of a resurgence, and Moonrise Kingdom was considered by many to be his best film yet. With all that in mind, I give you a trailer you’re likely either to love or hate. A while back I featured the first trailer for Disney’s Maleficent, a new take on the story of Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie as the titular villain and Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. Now we’ve got a new trailer that gives us a better look at the film. Take a look, and read on for my comments:
