*Author’s Note: This is a rather long essay about a movie most people have never seen. It’s more my unfiltered and unedited stream-of-consciousness analysis than it is a well-researched piece of film criticism. The movie has lots of interesting things to say, and it’s worth a watch. The first time I watched My Dinner with Andre, at the recommendation of my father, I fell asleep five minutes in and slept for the entire film. The film is often known as “that movie where two guys sit and talk for two hours,” which is both 100% accurate and entirely misleading. The second time I watched it, again with my father, I was completely spellbound, and it has since been one of my favorites. My Dinner with Andre is one of those movies where you get out of it as much as you’re willing to put into it, much like any good conversation, and these are my thoughts on it.
