Trailer: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I’ll be honest, since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was first officially announced a little over a year ago it became my most anticipated Star Wars movies, far more than The Force Awakens. As much as I enjoyed that film, Rogue One was always easier for me to get excited about. I love the idea of exploring the vast Star Wars universe without having to be tied into the story of the Skywalker family (in the way many of the books did), and with the departure of George Lucas I was less worried about whether or not Rogue One is the “true” version of the story. Canon has always been important to me, so the fact is that I’ll never be as attached the main series of new films the way others might be, no matter how much I enjoy them. But I am 100% behind Rogue One, whose first trailer debuted this morning and which promises a very different take on Star Wars than we’ve ever seen before. Take a look at the trailer below and tell me what you think, and then check back later in the week for a more in-depth analysis complete with screencaps (I keep wracking up more articles to write, don’t I?). As for my first thoughts, it’s definitely thrilling, and I love how it’s going out of its way to give us a different view of events with which we’re somewhat familiar. It’s trying very hard to differentiate itself from the main series of films, which is definitely a good thing. Plus I’m already rooting for Felicity Jones’ character, Jyn Erso, and more strong female protagonists can only be a good thing!

  1. waht? Where’d this come from??????

At first I was like “is this a fanfilm????” Then, oh, wait, no, this is the real thing. I had no idea this existed until now.

It appears to be set around the first Death Star. This could be interesting!

There seems to be a lot of tying into the first film going on in Force Awakens (which echoes the feel of the first film) and in this one. As of Our Director was trying to re-root, rather than re-boot, us in the wide eyed wonder that was Star Wars, while bringing it into the 21st century technologically and spiritually.

    Can’t wait!

  2. After the amazing Star Wars Rebels finale this trailer has me super pumped! It was way longer than I thought it would be and Jyn looks like a great character! I love the grittier war feel to it but it still feels 70ish and believable in the timeline. I’m very excited for this film!

    • I know, how crazy was that Rebels finale?! I’m also surprised at the length of the trailer and how much it showed, way more than the first trailer for The Force Awakens. I agree on the 70s vibe, which I think will be a nice change of pace.

      • I think so. The whole film looks like a great change of pace. With Rebels I feel like it’s this secret gem that average moviegoers are missing out on but us true fans love. It was so great! Ahsoka may be the best character in all of Star Wars. Anyway, Jyn looks very promising too and it all looks gritty and like a real war movie, which despite being called Star Wars we’ve never really gotten. I’m super pumped.

  3. Nice callbacks to the original trilogy, but I am always worried about movies that try to be prequels or in-betweens of existing canon. I cannot at the moment recall one where it worked out (some must exist, of course).
Actually exploring the universe of SW, and effectively expanding it for all of us not bothered with the books, is promising.
Still super worried about the Han Solo movie.

    • I’m with you regarding the Han Solo movie. There’s just so very much that can go wrong so easily. No casting decision will please everyone, but it’s just as important that the tone and writing match the character and the universe. I’d much rather they explore new parts of the universe (or existing parts from new angles like Rogue One) rather than give us young versions of beloved characters.
