I adore Disney, for a large variety of reasons, most of which I’m sure you’ve heard before. For what it’s worth, I grew up reading the actual fairy tales too. But most of my feelings about Disney make an appearance in my analysis of Saving Mr. Banks, which is a film I highly recommend, though I doubt it or my analysis of it is likely to change any minds. https://thelovepirate.net/2014/01/10/analysis-saving-mr-banks-and-disney-ideology/
I never liked they change the ending. I saw Bambi in the theatre when I was 6 and my Mom was crying in the Shot Mom scene so I patted her hand and reminded her “it’s just a cartoon”.
I don’t like the idea of “it’s just a cartoon”. You could say that about anything. It’s just a movie, it’s just a musical, it’s just a play, it’s just some old black and white movie, it’s just a book, it’s just a poem, it’s just a fairy tale, it’s just a story. Stories have meaning, regardless of the medium. Some of the most creative, important, and moving films of all time have been animated. Just look at tonight’s Best Animated Feature winner Inside Out. It may not be your cup of tea, and that’s totally fine, but don’t be dismissive of it because it’s “just” something you don’t like.
remember I was 6 so was mostly repeating back what my parents said to me about not getting over emotional or involved with what was on tv… it made it confusing about what was fiction vs non-fiction on the same media 🙂
I grew up reading the actual fairy tales so I just don;’t get why people enjoy disney….

I do my best! But seriously, I’m not trying to plug my article, just using it to make the points for which I wrote it.
