Welcome to “Trailer Tuesday” where I talk about trailers for upcoming movies.

Last week we looked at the latest trailer for Marvel’s next movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.  This week, we’ve got our first teaser trailer for the Marvel movie that’s coming after Guardians.  No, it’s not Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s Big Hero 6, an animated film from Disney Animation Studios based on the Marvel comics of the same name.  Take a look below and read on for my thoughts.

Here’s the official description of the film from Disney:

“Big Hero 6” is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

The trailer obviously doesn’t give us a lot to go on, but it’s still charming, funny and sweet.  I’ve always been a sucker for robots, and the adorably squishy Baymax seems right up my alley.  The voice cast hasn’t been officially announced yet, so we don’t get any dialogue or semblance of plot, but we are introduced to our hero, Hiro, and Baymax.

Hero has big plans for Baymax, turning him into something that looks like the ultimate fighting machine.

However, he’s forced to deal with the reality of the robot he created.

Here’s what I love about robots as characters, particularly ones who can’t talk.  Whether it’s R2-D2 or WALL-E or anything in between, I love how creative the artists behind a movie can be in trying to craft a personality and emotion around something that can’t express itself in the traditional sense.  I love the way Baymax goes after the soccer ball like a toddler, yet can’t figure out how to pick it up.

I love the sound design in this trailer, particularly the way Baymax’s “skin” has a rubbery, balloon sound as he walks and sounds appropriately squishy as Hiro tries to cram the armor on him.

My favorite thing in the entire trailer might be this expression that Baymax makes, seemingly looking straight at the camera as if to say, “Do you see what I have to put up with?”

Finally, everything is assembled and ready to go, and suddenly this starts to look more like a Marvel superhero movie.

Except that he doesn’t quite fit into the armor, and would rather be chasing a soccer ball instead.  Hiro does not look pleased.

I honestly have no idea what to expect from this film, other than I’m already in love with Baymax and want one to sit on my desk and stare at me all day while I work.  The Disney/Marvel relationship has been an interesting one so far.  On the whole, Disney has been content to let Marvel do its own thing and make their own movies, leading to the unique feel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The partnership is obviously working out, both in terms of box office and critical and fan reception.  Big Hero 6 will mark the first officially Disney film based on a Marvel franchise, rather than Disney simply owning and distributing movies made by Marvel.  Finding the right balance between the two brands will be the key for the film.  As a minimum, there’s little here for Disney to lose, because if the film fails it won’t do any damage to the Marvel Universe brand or the Disney Animation brand.  If it succeeds, however, this opens the door for an expansion of the relationship between the two divisions of Disney, potentially offering avenues for other Marvel properties that might not make sense as a live action feature to make it to the screen.  I’m very curious to see more from Big Hero 6 in the lead up to its November 7th release date.
